Meet Jess Cullen

Jess Cullen is a ceramic artist living and working in the Fan District of Richmond, Virginia. A Virginia native, she began throwing on the wheel in 2000 while living in Seattle, before moving to Richmond to attend graduate school at Virginia Commonwealth University.

While building an early career as an elementary school teacher, she maintained an active ceramics practice. She shifted in 2015 to working full time as both a ceramic artist and instructor.

Jess creates both functional ceramics and one-of-a-kind pieces, with an emphasis on clean lines, thoughtful forms, and the balance of shape and color. Beginning in fall 2026, she will lead the ceramics program at Collegiate School.
